Is Exfoliating Really that Big of a Deal?

With summer approaching in just two months, everyone wants to reveal their healthiest and most naturally fresh-looking skin. There is one remedy that ensures great results for all skin types and that is exfoliating. We know it’s important but never knew exactly what it does to our skin or why we need to exfoliate so often.

Exfoliating is the process in which the top layer of dead skin cells is removed to encourage new cells to grow and refresh the skins appearance. You can literally exfoliate any part of your body to repair your skin. Exfoliation can be performed physically, by using coarse scrubs on the skin or chemically. There are even certain scrubs that contain special kinds of acids. This acids dissolve and remove the dead skin cells without scrubbing. Whether your goal is to remove ingrown hair bumps or to lighten up your dark spots, by exfoliating, you are will see the results you’re looking for. The best type of exfoliation depends on your complexion and the health and sensitivity of your skin. If you have sensitive skin or severe acne, then you will want to choose a gentler exfoliating product and routine.

Now, the crucial question is, how often does one need to exfoliate before they start seeing results? This depends on the type of exfoliators you’re going to be using, physical exfoliators or chemical.

Most of us are probably familiar with physical exfoliators. These are your scrubs (apricot, sugar, salt, and bead varieties) and brushes (motorized or other types) that physically remove dead skin cells from your face. They’re effective but can also be abrasive. However, this method comes with the temptation to brush or scrub too hard on your skin. When scrubbing too hard on sensitive skin you will ultimately begin to scrub off the new layers of your skin.

On the other hand, chemical exfoliators contains all of the acids. A few common exfoliating ingredients you may have come across include alpha hydroxy acids, such as glycolic acid and lactic acid. You might’ve also seen beta hydroxy acids, including salicylic acid in the ingredients, as well. They usually come in a medicated wash, like your common acne cleanser or an exfoliating serum.

Doctors suggest exfoliating about twice a week, preferably starting with a chemical exfoliator. These exfoliators tend to be less intense and also more evenly applied. However, you can exfoliate as often as your skin will tolerate it. If you have dry skin, for instance, you might be more sensitive to harsh scrubbing products, while someone with oily skin would be able to tolerate them more easily. Luckily, it’ll be obvious if you’ve overdone it, as your skin will become red and may even sting a little.
