The thriller/drama Bird Box took Netflix by storm with its exhilarating story line and mysterious content from beginning to end.  Following the movie’s amazing response from viewers came all sorts of content including funny memes, party themes, and the bird box video challenge. More important than all of these trinkets that evolved from the movie where the overall messages and themes people grasped while watching. Some of underlying takeaways from the film include importance of blocking out worldly distractions in order to reach your goals, paying attention to the signs and symbolism given to you in order to realize when turmoil is ahead of you, and not being afraid to take risk and make sacrifices for the things and the people who matter most in your life.

Blocking Out Distractions

Sandra Bullock played the main character Malorie, who is expecting when mass suicide brings the world to a frightening halt. Darkness plagues the nation, in turn, making people want to kill themselves at the sight of any outside atmosphere. This darkness represents some of the distractions on the road to success, such as depression, and drug abuse. Both examples affect the mental state of mind. As change occurs in life, good and bad, it is important to be able to remain positive, persevere and overcome. When we let change disrupt our mental capacity people tend to fall into depression and or use drugs to cope. Malorie and the others that survived the first wave of mass suicide had to adapt to a new standard of living and find ways to survive that allowed for mental stability.

Remained Focused

As the disease evolved some individuals were able to live with it. But in retrospect, they became vessels of the darkness now committed to luring others to take off their blindfolds, by any means necessary. Early on in the film, the uninfected realize that birds could detect when the darkness was near. They begin chirping loudly as a warning. In most situations of temptation and danger, there are signs and red flags that we simply ignore or are not focused enough to catch small details. One scene placed Malorie and her children in the woods lost and separated from each other. The darkness spoke to each of their weaknesses, provoking them to take off their blindfolds. Malorie specifically was taunted by the voice of her late lover Tom. Even though the sounds were comforting and familiar she focused on a greater purpose, finding her children.

Sacrifice

Sacrifice is one of the most important pieces for reaching any goal. Malorie and her children were on a journey to join other uninfected individuals in quest of a better life. She sacrificed sleep, time, and the nurturing aspects of motherhood in order to make sure her children were equipped with the knowledge and tools they needed to make it to their final destination. In real life situations, people fall short from their dreams and possible achievements not because they are not capable but because they are not prepared. Preparation and sacrifice go hand in hand. Athletes must sacrifice in order to be prepared for games. Doctors must make sacrifices in order to earn their degree. Everyone must sacrifice in life but the more you do the greater the preparation and outcome.
